We took his 1949 Plymouth coupe up Fairview Canyon to the top of Huntington Canyon. The coal mine had a horse-drawn hopper; I was given a helmet & loaded in the hopper, then with my Dad beside the drover, we headed into the mine shaft. At the end of the shaft were miners ready to load the hopper with coal from the mine face; while the drover hooked the horse up to the other end of the hopper. My Dad & I had to walk back-out, up against the wall to avoid the hopper as it came back and forth. (Also there was a crew starting a side tunnel with a drill.)
We couldn't ride-out because at the mine opening, the horse with the drover behind would veer to the side after the drover had pulled a pin releasing the hopper straight-ahead to hit a bumper, dumping the coal into the top of a chute - a coal truck could then be loaded from the chute below.
I wonder about the hazards to the horse; for example, the pin not getting pulled - a horse once spooked may never work in the mine again.

Addendum: This blurb not a MyStory but my Dad's story ... in coal towns like CastleGate, they raised canarys for use in the mines, but there were canarys that never sang - sometimes the canary in the coal mine did not die, it just never sang again.
Addendum: Then there is the car buying experience ... there was once a caricature of Nixon with the caption , "Would you buy a used car from this man?" Yes, I would prefer Nixon over Honda which may have the best reliability, but the worst hard-sell, high-pressure dealers (likewise for dealerships owned by Carlock). New or used, a saleman is just a front man for the "man behind the curtain". TrueCar.com does new & Kelley Blue Book knows used, but what dealers offers up-front pricing with no fees? Times are not tough for me, but I made-up my own recipe for a hot potato sandwich - using either hash brown or mashed potatoes - shallow-fry a latka (potato pancake) with flour & egg to help hold it together, then serve on a yeast roll or muffin or thick slices of toasted sourdough or rye bread. I'm sure Gran'ma Belle did what she could to fancify it for the boys, so I add cheese with either bacon or sausage, too ... bon appetit ... Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025794126055518424.post-38978220195391005012012-07-26T13:39:00.000-05:002012-08-06T13:10:57.646-05:00

The master bath (& bedroom) is mostly unused, I was weighing myself when I thought I ought to run water thru the drains to fill the traps since the toilet bowl was low (in the winter I antifreeze them), to my surprise there was a frog under the seat, like pictured above, but not as colorful. By the way, this bathroom's decor/theme is cutsy frog.
The soaring club's Schweizer training glider - in it I soloed and got my glider rating. In it I never soared with eagles, but flew ridge lift with hawks - even spooked and "chased" a deer on the ridge top. My last flight in 69R was a ride with a friend - a quick aero-tow to the ridge & back seeking lift, but not a bump; however, upon landing we learned of the excitement - there had been a earthquake while we were up-in-the-air. (Note: the earthquake epicenter was just NNE of the airport where the powers-that-be later put Jordanelle dam & reservoir - no fault was going to stop them.)
The soaring club also had a single-seat sailplane (Cherokee II RM) which tried to put the fear of flying in me. In a spin, a wing would suddenly drop, flip upside-down, then nose to ground, but neutralize controls and it would just as suddenly return to normal flight. Then there was once I went red-line airspeed in clear air turbulence - realization: I was more afraid of the parachute on my back (it simply served as the seat back cushion).
Valentines Day 10 years ago was our 25th wedding anniversary. Previously Joelyn said she wanted to do something special for our 25th - celebration, vacation, etc.; I wasn't keen on the idea.
That Valentines Day morning, I took Joelyn to her regularly scheduled, on-going appointment with her oncologist who wasn't aware it was our anniversary. This was the day Dr Regina referred Joelyn to hospice ... mid-day hospice was at our house with a complete support system: scheduling nursing & an aide and a hospital bed & oxygen was delivered. That day was special, all right; especially since I still cannot believe I was married for 25 years.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025794126055518424.post-69486240104964423012012-02-06T16:20:00.000-06:002012-02-13T13:26:56.445-06:00Happy Birthday annual-versaryRobert Nesta MarleyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025794126055518424.post-39600774798412975252011-11-30T13:23:00.003-06:002011-11-30T13:23:00.492-06:00BlueAmberol.vs.Blu-ray

Edison Blue Amberol Record with the following on the rim: "1875. This past weekend was the annual traffic-jam (http://www.reelfootartsandcrafts.com/); craftier than artsy, but mostly peripheral flea-markets & lots of yard sales. This coming weekend is the waterfowl festival (http://www.reelfootwaterfowl.com/); lots of duck calls, but no duck come!

'Tis Fall judging by the farm equipment I encounter on the road. Corn is finishing-up then soy and cotton starting-up...streets are lined with cotton bolls especially as they converge on the gin.

Since the flooding in early May--some bugged-out never to return--seems like it's been even quieter around here; maybe it's those who couldn't afford a muffler before, can't afford gas now.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025794126055518424.post-62919355400426526492011-08-09T09:45:00.001-05:002011-08-09T09:45:01.050-05:00*Sparkle Brewed---

to the Altitude
That was Fisher Beer's jiggle.

I was having a Fisher with ALynn, a college friend, when I first noticed the mountain scene w/REFRESHING AS A MOUNTAIN SPRING on the bottom of his can as he was taking a sip. This is when Fisher Beer was brewed by Lucky; not long afterwards, it was undrinkable when it was made in Golden, CO.
I had assumed Colony Collapse Disorder was Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus not being contained & getting into the US; rather CCD may be the newer systemic pesticide use on mono-culture, industrial farms. I had toyed with the idea of "bee~ng" a nomadic/itinerant bee~herder; however migratory beekeepers are just agri-biz - not for the honey but pollination - & truckers too. Funny~honey is imported.
My criteria for rural living included not being near/downwind from feedlots nor oil fields and avoiding cotton (fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides,& even defoliants at harvest). BUT corn&soy utilizing systemics ought to be avoided too. (Note: I live downwind from both corn&soy; I find soybeans growing in my lawn - I may be taken-out & lynched by the Monsanto posse.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025794126055518424.post-74050383804369212562011-06-17T16:21:00.000-05:002012-01-19T13:14:23.387-06:00Dog's lifeGood dogs ...
